The expert opinion on the state of preservation and the protection conditions of the sites and structures of the Auschwitz-Birkenau complex. Analysis of the conditions of development and implementation of the Management Plan. Part 1/5 - Findings
Within the framework of preparatory steps taken to develop the Management Plan for the World Heritage Site Auschwitz Concentration Camp, Polish National Commission for UNESCO ordered in 2005 an evaluation of the current state of conservation and protection of the Auschwitz-Birkenau complex. It is a collection of data identifying the maintained structures of the former Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp. It presents the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum priorities and procedures of conservation proceedings, rules of visitors' service and the ways of counteraction the potential threats. Regarding the Museum's environs the paper includes the set of information about the preservation and protection status of the post-camp structures as well as the problems and expectations of entities running in this area. The expert opinion forms the documented basis for defining the scope of the necessary conservation initiatives in the direct vicinity of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum - helping to maintain the authenticity and integrity of the post-camp complex. All recommendations and conclusions were prepared following the assumption that they are to be used by all the stakeholders, and as a support to precise an official standpoint by the state services responsible for the cultural heritage.
