The publication presents the outcome of pioneer research conducted in 1992-1999 by architects Jadwiga Rawecka and Marek Rawecki on the protection zone of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The study describes the intricacies of establishing of the Museum and its consecutive protection zones in the post-war years. It illustrates the events accompanying the research whose objective was to identify sites and structures of the former Auschwitz extermination camp and to define guidelines for its preservation and conservation. The works outlined embrace a wide array of issues related to site planning, building law, social and legal problems, historical aspects of the pre-1939 period and the 1940-1945 period, as well as the post-war development transformations of this unique area.
