Title in English:

Independent structures as a tool of creative reuse of sacred architecture

Abstract:

In the light of changing social needs, many churches in Europe are re-used. A key problem of many of these adaptations is the necessity to separate smaller functional zones out of a large volume of the church nave. Cohesion in a building adapted like this can be achieved by application of independent structure, which is a construction statically not connected with adapted building, but at the same time enable modifications of functional and spatial dispositions. The article discusses the motives and limitations of use of independent structures, as well as applied materials, technologies and construction systems. The article was developed on the basis of the analysis of 160 churches and chapels from Great Britain and Germany, that have been adapted to new functions after 1960. Twelve of them were independent structures, eight out of them were selected to further research.
